New Era for Open Contactless Solutions Drives Volume Beyond 2008 Expectations

CARTES 2008, PARIS, France, November 4, 2008 – Beating its own earlier projection by many months, INSIDE Contactless, a leading provider of advanced, open-standard contactless chip technologies, today announced that demand for its award-winning MicroPass® intelligent payment platform has passed the 100-million unit mark in 2008, with production doubling in the second half of the year since reaching 50 million units in May 2008. MicroPass was launched at CARTES 2005, and continues to achieve unprecedented success as the industry’s platform of choice for the new generation of converged applications such as open-loop and closed-loop payments, transit payment, loyalty, access, ID and others on a single contactless card.

Already approved within multiple cards products by Visa, MasterCard and Discover Network, including all required functional, analog, performance and security requirements compliance, the MicroPass platform is the most broadly available core technology for contactless payments, powering bank cards from over 30 card issuers worldwide. More than 25 card manufacturer products powered by MicroPass are available for immediate bank card issuer adoption. Its low power and high performance, combined with the industry's fastest transaction time and outstanding read distance, enables MicroPass to deliver a superior consumer experience for credit, debit, pre-paid debit and other applications in a broad range of innovative form-factors.

“2008 has surpassed our expectations, showing greater than anticipated demand for MicroPass within the financial industry in both the U.S. and Canada,” said Charles Walton, executive vice president of payments for INSIDE Contactless. “Our new MicroPass products for innovative contactless payments on mobile and other devices (MicroPass 4003-S sticker), lightweight ICAO ID cards and documents (MicroPass 5101 and MicroPass 5102), and developer products for other extension markets (MicroPass 4001, MicroPass 5001 and developer kits) show great promise in further expanding the deployed base of MicroPass for 2009.
INSIDE AND FIME TEAM TO ENSURE NFC INTEROPERABILITY

Technology Leaders to Solve Key Test and Certification Challenges
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, October 30th, 2008 – Working to ensure the continued growth and acceptance of Near Field Communication (NFC), INSIDE Contactless, the world leader in advanced open-standard contactless chip technologies, and FIME, a leading smartcard and terminal testing solutions provider, today announced they are joining forces in a partnership designed to speed up the attainment of NFC interoperability. Through this partnership, the two companies will combine their expertise and leadership to identify and resolve potential conflicts in the interoperability of NFC devices, and develop a comprehensive process, support and service portfolio for testing and certifying NFC mobile handsets.
INSIDE and FIME will work in close cooperation with their customers in this partnership to help develop the most effective test and certification process, and plan to present a first version of this process and associated tools and services to their common customers early next year. Through this cooperative effort, INSIDE and FIME will be able to offer their customers greater visibility into the testing and certification requirements at an early stage during development of their NFC mobile handset products, and provide them with products, tools, know-how and services to ensure compliance. The partnership also intends to consult with various standards bodies, including the NFC Forum, ETSI, ISO and payment and transport associations, providing valuable results based on their experience to boost or amend current certification standards.
“As the leaders in our respective areas of expertise, we are in the best position to undertake this crucial task for the benefit of the entire NFC ecosystem,” said Philippe Martineau, executive vice president of the NFC Business line at INSIDE Contactless. “By developing this comprehensive test and certification process, our customers will be able to avoid the kinds of early market problems that plagued other technologies by ensuring interoperability of NFC devices from day one.”
NFC devices not only have to comply with the NFC Forum’s requirements and include the minimum interoperability level, but also with ETSI standards for HCI and SWP protocols. In addition, they need to be able to cohabitate with traditional NFC applications, as well as a large range of legacy applications and infrastructure combining payment, transport, access control, loyalty and other applications.
On top of all those requirements, there is the issue of connecting to the SIM card or other secure element (SE). As a result, the complex relationship between the NFC chip and the handset application framework requires a new dimension in testing to ensure an optimal interoperability level for contactless applications. To reach the full promise of NFC from day one, this interoperability issue has to be taken into account for the entire NFC device design, manufacturing and go-to-market process.
“Our partnership is uniquely positioned to embark on this mission, bringing to bear not only our combined expertise in NFC technology, but also early access to customers engaged in NFC product developments who need to ensure interoperability when they go to market,” said Vincent Poty, sales director at FIME. “Through our partnership, INSIDE will be able to provide an optimal interoperability level for their NFC chips and tags to ensure their customers develop NFC-compliant products, and FIME will be able to market the test tools and test services these customers will need to ensure NFC interoperability.”
NFC is a short-range wireless connectivity technology standard designed for intuitive, simple and safe communication between electronic devices. INSIDE holds essential patents for the development of NFC, and is deeply involved in helping to create the standard. NFC communication is enabled by bringing two NFC compatible devices within a few centimeters of one another. Applications of NFC technology include contactless transactions such as payment and transit ticketing, simple and fast data transfers, including calendar synchronization or electronic business cards, and access to online digital content.
INSIDE’s innovative next-generation MicroRead™ NFC chip uses Near Field Communication for proximity transactions and interactions. Incorporated into mobile phones or consumer electronics devices, it enables them to operate like RF readers and contactless smart cards to cover the large range of NFC applications and much more. Through its service offerings, INSIDE’s extensive experience with NFC technology enables mobile phone manufacturers to develop a reliable design quickly and cost effectively.

Leading Payment Card Producer Ramps Up Capacity for Multi-Million Unit Market
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, and LITTLETON, Colo., October 14, 2008 – CPI Card Group (CPI), a global leader in financial and commercial card production and services, and INSIDE Contactless, a leading provider of advanced, open-standard contactless chip technologies, today announced a partnership to create the industry’s first contactless sticker product for open-loop (branded bank card) payments. CPI anticipates volume production of the stickers, which are based upon INSIDE’s new MicroPass® payment sticker technology.
INSIDE’s sticker technology, which was announced last week, combines the flexible MicroPass 4003 contactless payment processor with a tuned RF antenna in a compact, shielded prelam for payment sticker applications. INSIDE’s innovative shielding design improves performance by protecting the chip and antenna inside the sticker from interference that might be caused by the metals and radio signals within mobile phones and other electronic devices. CPI has established a scalable operational process for producing these payment stickers based upon MicroPass prelams delivered from INSIDE. The sticker devices are delivered from CPI already pre-cut from ID1 card devices and pre-personalized to allow for fulfillment using traditional card fulfillment equipment and processes.
“CPI Card Group offers the largest production capacity in North America, and would not be making this kind of investment if we weren’t confident of the magnitude of this market opportunity,” said Bob Clarke, vice president of sales and marketing at CPI Card Group. “Our project management and manufacturing expertise combined with INSIDE’s technology leadership and support has enabled us to go from prototype engineering samples to developing and introducing a real payment sticker product in a very short time.”
According to Clarke, CPI Card Group will be delivering its first MicroPass-based payment stickers to a global leader in electronic commerce and payment services, and anticipates orders from several other leading card issuers in North America. Clarke also noted that while the initial payment stickers will provide open-loop payment applications, CPI intends to produce stickers that combine open-loop payments with other applications, such as transit, gift card and loyalty, as well as other closed-loop applications.
“CPI has been a valuable partner of ours for more than four years, and we appreciate their confidence in our technology and their significant efforts to bring this first open-loop payment sticker product to market so quickly,” said Didier Serra, general manager and executive vice president of sales, Americas for INSIDE Contactless. “We share CPI’s enthusiasm for this technology’s potential, and look forward to working with them on future payment and multi-application sticker solutions based on our MicroPass platform.”

Prototype Combines Certified Visa payWave and Cubic NextPASS Transit Applications
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, October 6, 2008 – Advancing its commitment to the transit payment system market, INSIDE Contactless, a leading provider of advanced, open-standard contactless chip technologies, today announced it will be demonstrating how the award-winning MicroPass® intelligent contactless payment platform can be applied to transit payment systems at the 2008 APTA International Transit Expo being held October 6-8 at the San Diego (Calif.) Convention Center. Working together with Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB), and Visa Inc. (NYSE: V), INSIDE will preview the first multifunction contactless payment card that supports both a type-approved Visa payWave payment application and Cubic’s NextPASS™ fare collection software that is compliant with APTA’s Contactless Fare Media Standard (CFMS).
INSIDE’s proof-of-concept demonstration will show how a single multi-application card based upon its MicroPass 4003 chip platform can be used to conduct contactless payments on both a retail POS terminal and on a Cubic transit fare collection device, and comes at a critical time in the evolution of transit payment systems. Local and regional transit operators will now have the choice of adopting or migrating to transit fare collection solutions based upon both APTA standards, private profiles, and open bank card standards with greater security, functionality and user convenience. This is also providing retailers and financial institutions with an opportunity to partner with transit operators to provide consumers with a single payment card that can also be used to conveniently pay for goods and services located near public transit stations. The combined Visa payWave/NextPASS contactless card is the first example of a technology that could be used to address this emerging demand.
“Our MicroPass intelligent contactless payment platform is specifically designed for high-volume, multi-brand and multi-application capabilities for the kind of next-generation contactless payment and transit applications we are demonstrating at the APTA Expo,” said Charles Walton, executive vice president of payments for INSIDE Contactless. “With strong support from Cubic and Visa, we are clearly demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing the flexible MicroPass platform for APTA-standard compliant transit cards, or multi-application cards with added Visa payWave support to meet the various needs of this evolving market.”
The demonstration can be viewed in the Cubic booth (#2833). In addition to the multi-application Visa payWave/NextPASS contactless card, INSIDE will also be demonstrating fare payments using a traditional MicroPass-based Visa payWave contactless card and a standalone MicroPass-based NextPASS contactless transit card.
Having a resident transit application on a general-purpose payment card enables it to be used like a native transit card. The transit payment system treats it just as a regular transit card, and is able to perform all the normal front-end processing. Because of its intelligence, the transit application on the card is able to cope with highly complex fare schedules based on distance, zones and time, for example, as well as various schemes for enabling riders to transfer between multiple transit lines.
“The MicroPass platform is the undisputed contactless payment market leader, and we have been working with INSIDE for more than two years to create this multi-function, type-approved contactless payment card that supports both contactless payment and NextPASS transit functionality,” said David deKozan, vice president of business development for Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc. “We look forward to continuing our co-development with INSIDE to produce a world-class product suite that is fully certified for deployment with our Nextfare systems and marketing them to transit operators globally.”
“As public transportation’s premier showcase of technology, products and services, Expo is a fitting venue for the demonstration of new multi-application fare system products that are able to take advantage of industry standards such as the ATPA Contactless Fare Media System (CFMS) Standard.” said Martin Schroeder, senior program manager, rail, fare system and energy programs, at APTA. “This is an exciting time for transit agencies as they explore the possibilities for their next-generation fare collection systems.”
Cubic’s Nextfare® Solution Suite is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art fare collection platform consisting of frontend equipment, card handling devices, device-level software and back office processing software designed to work together to enable complete fare policy implementation, asset management, statistical reporting and customer service administration while supporting the widest variety of contactless media options. Nextfare has been designed to support open standards such as ISO 14443, APTA CFMS, and contactless payment.
The MicroPass family of intelligent hardware platforms was designed from the ground up to support multiple contactless applications, including contactless payment card applications, transit fare collection, access control, retail loyalty programs and lightweight ID applications. Based upon a RISC architecture and optimized to the demanding requirements of contactless transactions, each member of the MicroPass product family features low power consumption, fast transaction processing, and overall performance meeting the demands of issuer organizations in the payments, transit, access control and ID industries. MicroPass is the platform of choice for card manufacturers and issuers in the U.S. market with more than 50 million MicroPass-powered bank cards deployed.

INSIDE CONTACTLESS TARGETS MICROPASS-BASED “ICAO-LITE” SOLUTIONS FOR GROWING ID MARKET

New Lightweight ICAO-Compliant Solutions to Satisfy a Broad Range of Secure Identity Applications

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, September 24th, 2008 – Anticipating the need in the market for faster, lighter-weight versions of ICAO-compliant identity chips, INSIDE Contactless, the world leader in advanced contactless microprocessor platforms, today announced it is building upon its MicroPass® platform to support a variety of “ICAO-Lite” identity applications. With faster read times and lighter weight memory options than standard ICAO solutions, INSIDE’s MicroPass ICAO-Lite offerings deliver a flexible, cost-effective solution for creating mid-range ID cards and documents that meet ICAO standards, but with less data storage.
ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) has set standards for ePassports and eVisas based upon the use of contactless chip technology with large EEPROM memory requirements to store high-resolution biometric data and other identity information. But ePassports, eVisas and other heavyweight ICAO ID applications represent only about 10 percent of the overall identity market, leaving a huge, unserved potential market for INSIDE’s ICAO-Lite solutions. As a result, INSIDE is anticipating strong market demand for other ID cards and documents with less stringent storage requirements and for customers requiring lower cost solutions.
“The flexibility and power of our MicroPass platform enabled us to quickly create this unique MicroPass ICAO-Lite solution and satisfy any customer need for customization,” said Bertrand Moussel, EVP of sales for EMEA and LATAM at INSIDE Contactless. “Our MicroPass ICAO-Lite solutions have already gained enthusiastic support from our customers for their mid-range ID card and document needs because of their speed and flexibility, as well for their interoperability with existing ICAO-compliant readers, personalization devices and other infrastructure.”
The new MicroPass ICAO-Lite solutions feature 16-bit RISC microprocessors, a file manager, hardware DES encryption, ISO 14443-B or 15693 RF interfaces, an option for Basic Access Control (BAC) application support, and 4 or 8 kilobytes of EEPROM data memory instead of the large, 64-kilobyte EEPROM found in standard heavyweight ICAO-compliant chips. While INSIDE’s ICAO-Lite solutions maintain the same logical data structure as a standard ICAO chip, the dramatically reduced on-chip data storage results in faster transaction times. By building upon the MicroPass architecture, INSIDE is able to offer its ICAO-Lite solutions at significantly lower cost compared to standard ICAO-compliant products, and INSIDE can customize the data structure to meet specific customer requirements.
According to Moussel, INSIDE has already developed a basic access control application for the MicroPass ICAO-Lite solutions , and preliminary tests indicate a logical data structure read time of less than one second for the 4-kilobyte memory option.
Since it was first launched at CARTES in November of 2005, the MicroPass intelligent payment platform has achieved its unprecedented success by continuing to deliver superior performance and flexibility, and is now the platform of choice for certified card manufacturers around the world. The MicroPass platform is designed to power open standard contactless and dual-interface bank card payments along with other value-added applications in all global regions. Based upon a RISC architecture and optimized to the demanding requirements of contactless transactions, each of the MicroPass family of products is designed to meet the demands of issuer organizations in the bank card payments, transit, access control, and ID markets.
Availability and Pricing
INSIDE’s MicroPass-based ICAO-Lite solutions are available now. The MicroPass 5101 features 8 kilobytes of available EEPROM data storage. The MicroPass 5102 features BAC application support in EEPROM and 4 kilobytes of available EEPROM data storage. For more information on pricing and INSIDE’s customization capabilities, security expertise, personalization, support and other service options, please contact INSIDE Contactless.
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, September 22, 2008 – INSIDE Contactless, a leading provider of advanced, open-standard contactless chip technologies, today announced the company has been recognized with the 2008 Frost & Sullivan North American Contactless Smart Cards Growth Excellence of the Year Award, in recognition of its role as a leader in shaping contactless payment technology in the smart card industry. The Frost & Sullivan Growth Excellence of the Year Award is bestowed each year upon the company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing and sustaining growth within shipments, revenues and profitability, and whose strategy will have a lasting impact on the market.
Frost & Sullivan credits INSIDE as one of the first companies to have designed a multi-application platform for contactless payment functions. The research and growth consulting firm recognized that such an early move propelled the company into a position of excellence in terms of technology innovation, enhanced its understanding of the market, and helped it gather valuable experience to stay ahead of competition. Frost & Sullivan also attributed INSIDE’s exponential sales growth primarily to its low-power, flexible MicroPass intelligent payment platform, which is designed specifically to support the contactless bank card market with extension into transit fare collection, access, control, and retail loyalty applications.
“INSIDE has achieved credibility in the industry not just by being a pioneer in contactless payment, but also by going the extra mile to solve consumer needs and address concerns,” said Shyam Krishnan, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “With a strong position in terms of technology innovation, an established name in the market, a loyal and wide partner network, and a booming market in which to operate, INSIDE Contactless is poised to become one of the leading players in the contactless smart cards market space.”
“It is very gratifying to be recognized for our leadership and excellence in this industry. The rapid acceptance of contactless payments in the U.S. has been a great reward for the INSIDE Contactless team,” said Rémy de Tonnac, chief executive officer. “We will not rest on these laurels, however, and we have many exciting new developments in the works to ensure that we keep meeting our customers’ expectations and maintain our drive in this industry.”
Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.
